The 3 things you SHOULD know about fuel contamination!

AdBlue In Diesel

Throughout Lancashire we are encountering increasingly more examples of AdBlue contamination whereby a motorist has put AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is partly as a result of motorists not being aware of the right way to use it (pay attention: it's in truth not a fuel additive), and in part because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are generally right adjacent to each other on the vehicle.

So, what is the matter with putting AdBlue in a diesel car?

Seeing that AdBlue is primarily ionised water, it is actually just like pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water do not mix at all and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Apart from this, the urea is extremely corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is prone to crystallisation, blocking injectors and fuel filters. If in case you have put AdBlue into the fuel tank empty it right away. And definitely do not turn over the car - not even to relocate it into a parking spot. Assuming you did start the vehicle you would probably need to have the complete fuel system purged and fuel filters changed out.

If perhaps you end up in this situation do not panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination service. Our technicians have the technical competence and working experience to get you back on the road rapidly and efficiently, without mess or fuss.

Wrong Fuel in Car Lancashire - Petrol in Diesel Car Breedy Butts

I'm not so enthusiastic about carrying out work weekends, and a couple weeks ago was the same. I'd just left home following a fantastic Sunday roast made by the better half, and I was off to help a gentleman after he had put the wrong petrol in his metallic red Volvo XC70. He was somewhere in Breedy Butts so it wouldn't be long before I arrived with him. Just as I drove up at the rear of the car and got out he said to me "Thank God! I stupidly had my attention on something else and didn't perceive I had put diesel in my petrol vehicle. I need to know if I brought on some harm by running it?" I explained truth be told there probably should not be any harm and also I'd personally drain the wrong fuel as quickly as possible for him. As expected I got the fuel drained from the vehicle and put in some correct fuel, and so yet another happy customer was able to continue on their trip with no difficulty. He could hardly stop thanking me, and this is exactly what helps make working on Sundays in Lancashire just a small bit better to me!

Wrong Fuel Doctor Breedy Butts - Fuel Rescue Breedy Butts

This really was the night shift. It was roughly dawn and hardly anyone was stirring. It had been quite quiet so far, and Brian and I were sitting reading through several old magazines. This was an unusual quiet hour in Lancashire. It was in fact so quiet that the instant my mobile eventually rang I leaped! The voice explained: "I have finished my evening shift and stupidly filled petrol in the friend's Volkswagen Touareg 2". I got him to tell us exactly where the car was situated and we set off, ending up in Breedy Butts no more than an hour later. The incorrect fuel was extracted from the engine. He said thanks for coming so rapidly. While we were coming back home we saw two girls at the side of the highway who appeared to have a flat. Accordingly we pulled over and helped them change it, much to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
